The Classic Art of Tea: Some interesting facts for tea drinkers.

There are lots of big fans of tea drinking. Not only just normal tea with milk and sugar, people love tasting all kinds of teas; green teas, flower tea's, fruit tea, herbal tea and so on and so forth. Today I went to a small Chinese grocery store near were I live and spent a whole load of time choosing some different types of teas

Basically I  love tea, and I know I have left it a while since my last blog because I've been working on something really interesting which is taking longer that I thought. So in the mean time I thought I would write out some interesting info about one of my favorite things; Tea! ^.^

In "The Art Of Tea Drinking", Olivia Yang opens with the words; "The Chinese People are without a doubt the ones who best understand the nature of tea". It's very difficult to exaggerate the importance of tea in Chinese culture. At various points throughout history, China's national drink (that's tea) has been designated as the state currency and used instead of cash.

The Origins of Tea

Emperor Chen Nung
While references to tea in Chinese literature go back approximately 5,000 years, the origins of tea's use as a beverage is unclear. Ancient folklore places the creation of the brew at 2737BC, when a camellia flower drifted into the cup of Emperor Chen Nung's boiled drinking water. However most scholars credit a reference found in Erh Ya, an ancient Chinese dictionary, dated about 350BC.

Originally tea was valued for its medicinal qualities. It has long been known that tea aids digestion, which is why many Chinese people prefer to consume tea after their meal. Another interesting side effect for smokers is that tea hastens the discharge of nicotine from the body. The elevation of tea drinking to an art form began in the 8th Century, with the publication of Lu Yu's "The Classic Art of Tea". The highly esteemed poet and former Buddhist priest had strict notions about the proper procedure for brewing, steeping and serving tea. For example, only water from a slow moving stream was acceptable and the tea leaves had to be placed in a porcelain cup. The perfect milieu for enjoying the finished product was in a pavilion next to a water lily pond in the company of a desirable woman. To be fair, this guy's work also contained several practical tips for manufacturing tea, many of which are still used today!
A statue of Lu Yu, who lived in China during the 8th Century

In the centuries following the publications of Yu's work, tea's popularity spread rapidly throughout China. Not only did tea drinking become a fitting subject for book and poems; Emperors bestowed gifts of tea worldwide to grateful recipients. Later, teahouses began dotting the landscape. While the Chinese haven't developed a ritualistic ceremony surrounding tea-drinking resembling the Japanese tea ceremony, they have a healthy respect for its role in their daily lives.

Types of Tea

One plant, many different types of tea.
Lots of tea aficionados are surprised to learn that all tea comes from the same source; the Camilla Sinensis Bush. While there are indeed hundreds of different varieties of Chinese Teas, most fall into four basic categories. Reputed to provide the most health benefits, White Tea is made from immature tea leaves that are picked shortly before the buds have fully opened. Green Teas are not fermented during processing, and thus retain the original color of the tea leaves. The most famous green tea is the expensive Dragon Well tea, grown in the hillsides of Hanghou. Also know as red tea, Black Teas are made from fermented leaves, which accounts for its darker color. Popular varieties of black tea include Bo Lei, a Cantonese tea often drank with dim sum - and luk on, a much milder tea favored by the elderly. Finally Oolong Tea is partially fermented, resulting in black - green tea. Examples of Oolong tea include Soi Sin, a bitter tasting tea brewed in the Fukien province.

There is also a fifth category known as "Scented Tea" made by mixing various flowers and petals with green of Oolong teas. The best known among these is Jasmine tea. White tea that's made with unripened tea leaves that are still covered with a downy, silvery fuzz, is becoming quite popular also.

While most of us have neither a pavilion or a lily pond conveniently situated in our back garden, we can still indulge our penchant for this centuries old beverage. With a little practice it's easy to brew the perfect cup of tea. Budding fortune-tellers who eschew tea bags can hone their skills in the art of tasseomancy (reading tea leaves).

Tasseomancy

The art of reading tea leaves is referred to as Tasseography (or Tasseomancy) and is a divination or fortune-telling method that in western tradition interprets patterns in tea leaves. The term also refers to the reading of coffee grounds. The term derives from the French word tasse (cup), which in turn derives from the Arabic tassa (cup). Tasseography, otherwise known as tasseomancy or tassology, is the art of tea leaf reading. "Tasse" or "tass" is an Arab root, meaning small cup or goblet.

Tea leaf reading is an ancient practice.

The beverage, Tea, is linked with the herbology part of alternative healing. People who seek answers through various forms of divination, such as tea leaf readings, are often healing their issues.

Tea leaf reading is an ancient practice interpreting patterns made by tea leaves in the cup. Although tasseography is commonly associated with Gypsy fortunetellers, the tradition of tea leaf reading arises independently from Asia, the Middle East and Ancient Greece.

Modern tasseography has also been associated with the Scottish, Irish and cultures throughout Eastern Europe.

Cheaper than the High Street - Finding Makeup Cheaper Online

cheap_highstreet_makeup_online

When in comes to makeup shopping I do enjoy looking on the high street in places such as Boots & Superdrug however in the back of my mind I always know which products & brands I will be able to find much cheaper online.

So I thought I would share with you my favourite websites that I know I can rely on and products that I will always be able to find online with free P&P and a good discount.

Just to give you an example of how much you can save I took all the products above and worked out if you purchased then all online instead of in Boots you would save a huge £28!

Amazon
Amazon is now much more than a website to purchase books and dvds from, it sells everything you can imagine and is particularly good for cosmetics at a discount that are direct from the brand itself and shipped through Amazon - so a safer way to shop. I actually love Amazon as much as I love eBay now as you can find such bargain and I even think it's easier to browse.

Current bargains - Maybelline Volum' One by One Mascara £2.99 , Bourjois Bronzing Powder £4.66 , Real Techniques Limited Edition Duo Fibre Collection £17.99 .

Fragrance Direct
Oh, how I love Fragrance Direct! For the past two years I have been placing quite frequent orders and have yet to be disappointed in the products I have picked. This really is the ultimate discount website with Essie, OPI and Sally Hansen nail polishes and makeup brands such as Bourjois, Revlon, Rimel L'Oreal etc. You can save so much with this website and I often spend £15-30 and receive so much compared to if I shoped in Superdrug or Boots and spent the same.

Current bargains - OPI Nail Polishes £3.99 , Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure £1.49 , Essie Nail Polishes £1.99  (all updated often). Maybelline Colour Sensational Lipstick £1.99 , Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss £1.99 , Maybelline Fit Me Foundation £4.50 .

eBay
Buying makeup from eBay can be a tricky thing as there are so many counterfeit products. So I would suggest to stay away from all Benefit and MAC products and look at what else the seller is selling (to spot any products you haven't seen that specific brand do before - a warning sign the seller is selling fake products). However you generally don't need to worry at all if the products are from high street brands such as Rimmel, L'Oreal, Maybeline, Revlon etc. But it you want to be totally sure then go for eBay sellers that also have makeup websites such as Direct Cosmetics.

Current bargains - Maybelline Color Tattoo in Eternal Gold £3.50  Metallic Pomegrante £3.84 (soooo want this shade for Autumn!), Essie Mini Duo £3.64 , Makeup Blender Sponge 99p, Bourjois Little Pot Eyeshadows £2.45 .

Cheap Smells
Last but not least a trusty website that you can pick up some good bargain from especially hair care products (I've purchased a few Tigi shampoos and a Macadamia Mask for such low prices in the past). Also this has the added benefit of free delivery. I don't seem to use this website as often now as I prefer Fragrance Direct. However when re-purchasing hair products this is always my first call. Also they are good for gift sets.

Current bargains - Model Co Smokey Eyes Set £8.95 , L'Oreal Glam Shine Fresh Lip Gloss £4.50, Orofluido Beauty Elixir Hair Oil £13.65

Hopefully some of you have found this helpful if you don't shop online that often.

Thank you xoxo

5 Steps to Creating a Winning Beauty Portfolio

A Portfolio is a collection of photos that showcase your skills and creativity as a Makeup Artist, Hairstylist or Colourist, or Fashion Stylist. You’ll need it to show prospective clients and employers what you can do for them. You can start with as few as  7-10 looks in your portfolio and build it up as you continue using your skills.
There are different types of portfolio ranging from a traditional display binder in a leather folder to an online graphical display. It  is also possible these days to show your skills to the world by burning your before and after photographs to a CD, creating a downloadable MP4  of your work or building a slideshow of photos you can show on your website.  You can even show the photos to prospective clients and employers with a mobile device such as an ipad or Kindle.
Creating your beauty portfolio
1. Take Lots of Photos
It is never too late to start taking pictures for your portfolio. As soon as you start practicing your skills you can take before and after photos of your work. Even at beauty school. This way you will also have a good record of how your skills progress over time.
2. Take Before and After Photos
Take both before and after photos so you can showcase the transformation that your skills provide. As a makeup artist take a quick snapshot of your model with their hair up and no make up and foundation and then take a photo afterwards with their hair down and looking fabulous to showcase the effects of a great make up job. Similarly to showcase your talents as a hairstylist or colorist you want the before photo to show a more disheveled model and the transformation that your work provides.
3. Find Models for Your Portfolio
create your beauty portfolio by finding modelsYou don’t need years of experience to develop an impressive portfolio but you do need talent and models.
One place you can find makeup models is by volunteering at local fashion shows and photo shoots. Fashion shows employ many models so you can create a large collection of looks to add to your portfolio within a few hours.
Try calling local modelling agencies and ask if they need photos of new talent.
You can also use your friends and family members to make a start on your portfolio too. The more people you can work with and practice your skills with the better.
4. Feature Only your Best Work
Your portfolio should only contain your best work so make sure you make up a lot of models so you have more to choose from. In addition choose a selection of different models with different skin tones, hair color  eye shape, face shape, age etc. You want to show that you can work with a variety of people to showcase your versatility. If you only show one type of model it will be assumed that that is all you can do! Make sure just to clear clear, quality photos. A bad photo also looks poorly on your skills.
5. Include the Type of Work You’re Interested in Doing
bridal portfolioIt is up to you what you put in your portfolio so focus primarily on showcasing those skills that you like to do most of all. For example if you like bridal work put more images of bridal work in your portfolio and minimize any other type of work. If you prefer to do short edgy hairstyles showcase those types of styles in your portfolio. You’ll attract potential clients who are interested in the look you show the most. .
In summary one of the most important items to have as a Makeup Artist, Hairstylist or Colourist, or Fashion Stylist is a quality portfolio. Make sure you get into the habit of taking before and after photos and updating your portfolio with the photos that show your talent at its best.

21 Reasons To Become A Vegetarian

  • Avoiding meat is one of the best and simplest ways to cut down your fat consumption. Modern farm animals are deliberately fattened up to increase profits. Eating fatty meat increases your chances of having a heart attack or developing a cancer.
  • Ever minute of every working day, thousands of animals are killed in slaughter houses. In the US alone 500,000 animals are killed for meat every hour.
  • There are millions of recorded cases of food poisoning every year, the vast majority of which are caused by eating meat.
  • Meat contains absolutely nothing - no proteins, no vitamins, no minerals - that the human body cannot obtain perfectly happy from a vegetarian diet.
  • African countries - that are suffering starvation - export grain to the developed world so that animals can be fattened for our dining tables.
  • "Meat" can include the feet, head, tail, rectum and/or spinal chord of any animal.
  • A sausage can contain ground up intestines, and no one can actually be sure the intestines were empty when they were ground up. Do you really want to eat the contents of a pigs intestines?
  • If we eat the plants we grow, instead of feeding them to the animals we eat the worlds food shortage will disappear virtually over night. One-hundred acres of land will produce enough beef to feed only 20 people, but enough wheat to feed over 240 people.
  • Everyday, tens of millions of one day old male chicks are killed because they will not be able to lay eggs. There are no rules about how this mass slaughter takes place. Some are crushed or suffocated to death, others are used as fertilizers or to feed other animals.
  • Animals that die in slaughter houses for your dinner table die alone, scared and in pain. This killing is merciless and inhumane.
  • It's much easier to stay slim and maintain a healthy weight if you are a vegetarian.
  • Half the rain forests in the world have been destroyed to clear the ground to graze cattle for beef burgers. The burning of the forest contributes to 20% of the worlds green house gases! Roughly 1,000 species a year become extinct because of the destruction of the rain forests. Approximately sixty million people die a year of starvation. Almost all those lives could be saved if they could eat the grain used to feed this livestock, if Americans were to eat just 10% less meat.
  • The World's fresh water shortage has been made much worse by animal farming. And meat producers are the biggest water polluters out there. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce only 1 pound of meat. If the UK and US meat industries were not supported by tax payers paying large portions of their water costs, hamburger meat would cost $35/£25 per pound.
  • If you eat meat you are consuming hormones fed to the animals. No one knows what effect those hormones will have on your health. In some parts of the world as many as one on four hamburgers contain growth hormones given to cattle.
  • The following disease are common among meat eaters: Anemia, appendicitis, arthritis, breast cancer, cancer of the colon, cancer of the prostate, constipation, diabetes, gallstones, gout, high blood pressure, indigestion, obesity, piles, strokes and varicose veins. Lifelong vegetarians visit hospital 22% less often then meat eaters, and usually only have to stay for shorter periods. Vegetarians also have a 20% lower blood cholesterol than meat eaters which reduces their chances of suffering from heart attacks and cancer considerably.
  • Some farmers use tranquilizers to keep animals calm. Others use antibiotics to starve off infections, when you eat meat you are eating those drugs. In America 55% of all antibiotics are fed to animals and t he percentage of staphylococci infections resistant to penicillin went up from 14% in 1960 to 91% by 1988.
  • In a lifetime the average meat eater will consume 36 pigs, 36 sheep and 750 chickens and turkeys.
  • It's well know that animals suffer from both pain and fear just as humans do. How would you like to spend our last hours locked in a truck, packed into a cage with hundreds of other terrified animals, and the cruelly pushed into a blood soaked slaughter chamber?
  • Animals of only a year old are often far more rational and capable of logical and intelligent thought than human babies from 6 weeks up. Eating dead animals is barbaric.
  • The vast majority of vegetarians are natural fitter than  meat eaters. Many of the world's most accomplished and famous athletes live on vegetarian diets.

In theory, a human life is considered by most to priceless, in actual reality however each human life is priced at an average of $50,000. But taken apart and sold in pieces, to be recycled by others the human body is worth over double the amount placed on it's life alone.

  • Your scalp -$607
  • A skull with teeth -$1,200
  • Coronary Artery  -$1,525
  • Shoulders -$500 each

Why does the Black Market exist?
In the US alone about 113,100 people are currently waiting for organ transplants, and roughly 14,144 organs were donated in the year 2011. On average 18 people die a day waiting on a n organ transplant.
Science is also consistantly seeking bodies too: Around 11,000 bodies were donated research in 2011.
Now let's enter the Black Market:Your one stop shop for blood, bones and body parts. In the US alone, over the past 25years an estimated 1,700 families have reported thier loved one's bodies being stolen, and over $6million made in estimated profits changed hands for stolen body parts.
How does it all work?:A broker will solicit funeral homes to illegally provide body parts for payment. Even if most funeral homes turn these brokers away it only takes one crooked employee to supply parts. Parts may be removed surgacilly and then the body is sewn shut and re-dressed to disguise the theft. Or, if the body is cremated only a prtion of the ashes returned to the family may be real.

There are also growing incidents of Blood Farming occouring across the world today now too, where hostages are held and milked for blood for an extended period of time.

In 2005, a New Jersey had two discs in her back replaced, and only after discovered that her new bones had been illegally stolen from the dead.

In 2010, a Southwest Airlines employee discovered a shipment of dozens of Human Heads in the cargo hold.
